Professor Grant Horner’s Bible-Reading System

I know lots of people like to get into a 1 year Bible reading plan starting in the new year. I have tried some of these plans before. Some of them will have you read a little in the morning, and then more at night; others will have you read from the OT and then from the NT; some will just have you read straight through form cover to cover. But generally if you read 3-4 chapters a day you’ll get through the Bible in 1 year.

To date I have never stayed faithful to one of these plans. I think it’s just because I get bored with the monotony of them. I need some variety.

This year I am going with the “Professor Grant Horner’s Bible-Reading System”. This plan actually requires you to read 10 chapters each day. So if you stick to it you’ll read the Bible almost twice in 1 year. It seems a lot to read 10 chapters each day, but actually it only takes 30-45 minutes depending on how fast of a reader you are. This plan gives you lots of variety. What you do is read 1 chapter from 10 different lists of books each day. You read from both the NT and the OT. Some books you’ll read more than others. For example you’ll read Proverbs and Acts once each month. You’ll read the 4 gospels just over 4 times each year. It’s a unique plan, and so far I like it very much. If you miss a day, no big deal, just keep going the next day. If you want to read 20 chapters a day you can do that too. Or, read 5 chapters in the morning, and 5 in the evening.

Here’s Professor Grant’s advice on how to stick to the plan:

(1) Read one chapter from each list each day; in one sitting or two. At the
end of a book; go to the next book. At the end of the list; start it again. Do
it in the order given.

(2) Read quickly (without “speed-reading”) in order to get the overall sense.
Read as fast as you comfortably can with moderate retention. You’re not
studying deeply or memorizing; shoot for 5-6 minutes per chapter. At the
end of a chapter, move immediately to the next list.

(3) GET THROUGH THE TEXT – no dawdling, back reading, looking
up cross-references!

Below is the PDF form explaining the plan in more detail, and the lists of books you need to read each day to follow this plan…
